Bénin: Romuald Wadagni takes office as new president
Romuald Wadagni has officially been sworn in as the new President of the Bénin during a ceremony held in Cotonou on Sunday, May 24. The former Finance Minister inherits the leadership after a decade under Patrice Talon.
Elected in April with over 94% of the vote, the 49-year-old leader now begins a seven-year term that may be renewed. In his inaugural address, Wadagni paid tribute to his predecessor while pledging to deliver tangible economic growth for citizens.
Economic legacy and security challenges
As the architect of Bénin’s recent economic reforms, Wadagni faces immediate pressure to maintain fiscal stability while addressing pressing security concerns. The rise of jihadist activity in northern regions demands decisive action, with the new president vowing a “firm state response” and deeper regional collaboration to counter the threat.
Diplomatic thaw signals hope for regional stability
The inauguration saw an unexpected thaw in relations with neighboring Sahel nations. Niger’s Prime Minister, Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, attended the event and received warm applause, signaling a possible easing of tensions that had strained Cotonou’s diplomatic ties. High-ranking representatives from Burkina Faso and Mali were also present, further indicating a potential shift toward regional cooperation.
Wadagni’s early policy choices regarding public freedoms will be closely scrutinized, particularly as civil society groups have criticized the outgoing administration for restricting political and media spaces in the country.
