Elye Wahi and Kaïl Boudache, both facing departures from Nice, emerged as the pivotal figures in the club’s successful battle to remain in Ligue 1. On Friday evening, their outstanding contributions helped secure a decisive 4-1 victory over Ligue 2 play-off contenders Saint-Étienne, following a goalless draw in the first leg.
The Allianz Riviera witnessed an outpouring of emotion, particularly from Elye Wahi. After netting Nice’s third goal in the 87th minute, and then a stylish fourth in the 90th+2, Wahi was overcome with joy, embracing coach Claude Puel. The striker, tears welling in his eyes as he spoke after the match, expressed immense pride in his performance and that of the entire team, particularly in securing such a crucial result at home.
This thrilling evening, even without a crowd, will undoubtedly be etched into the history of the Gym. Wahi’s loan spell proved to be an undeniable success, positioning him as the cornerstone of Nice’s arduous journey to retain their top-flight status. He revitalized the Azuréen attack, scoring nine goals across all competitions during his six-month stint. Personally, this period allowed him to rediscover his vibrant form, reflected even in his distinctive red braids, specially dyed for this final fixture.
During his time at Nice, Wahi also earned his first call-up to the Ivorian national team, and he is now set to join them for the upcoming World Cup. He will return to Frankfurt with a transformed reputation, having definitively shed any previous perceptions of nonchalance, demonstrating unwavering commitment and a refreshing energy to the entire squad.
boudache, the determined talent
Sharing the spotlight at the Allianz Riviera was another forward with a unique story, the young Kaïl Boudache, aged just 19. Not initially part of Nice’s plans last summer, when he underwent trials at Braga, nor in December, when he politely declined offers from Dunkerque (L2), Boudache remained steadfast in his ambition to play for his formative club. This determined young Aiglon also experienced a truly memorable start to 2026.
He seized the opportunity presented by the coaching duo of Claude Puel and Julien Sablé in January, showcasing his explosive speed and dynamism. These qualities were on full display when he pounced on an attacking ball to convert it into the crucial 2-1 goal in the 81st minute. This memorable strike, perhaps, stands as a final gift to Nice. After a period of careful consideration, and uncertainties surrounding Nice’s future project, Boudache chose to accept an offer from Lyon. He is scheduled to sign his first professional contract, a three-year deal, in the Rhône region this coming Monday.
