Following France’s 2-0 triumph over Morocco, celebrations across the Île-de-France region unfolded largely without major disturbances, resulting in a notably low number of arrests.

The French national team’s 2-0 quarter-final victory against Morocco in the World Cup sparked widespread jubilation, yet the overnight festivities remained largely peaceful. Initial reports indicate a celebratory atmosphere prevailed throughout Paris and its immediate suburbs, punctuated by only a handful of isolated incidents.

Ten individuals detained

While some enthusiastic fans lit flares in the capital to mark their team’s success, a few instances of firework mortar discharges were noted in the nearby suburbs. By Friday morning, a preliminary assessment revealed that ten individuals were apprehended across Paris and its surrounding areas in connection with the post-match celebrations. Specifically, three arrests in Paris were for phone theft, another four in the capital involved armed violence and conspiracy to commit violence, and three more arrests in Seine-Saint-Denis were for discharging fireworks. The status of these detentions, whether they led to formal custody, remains unclear at this time.

Minor injury reported after altercation in the 7th arrondissement

In Paris, an unexpected power outage led to the cancellation of the match screening at the Grand Rex. Consequently, supporters dispersed to nearby bars to watch the game. Following the final whistle, crowds spilled onto the streets, causing temporary traffic disruptions. However, police intervention successfully guided them back to the sidewalks without further incident.

Near Quai Jacques Chirac in the 7th arrondissement, an altercation erupted among supporters around 12:30 AM. One individual sustained a minor stab wound to the hip and was subsequently hospitalized for treatment.

Authorities had previously designated this quarter-final clash between France and Morocco as a high-risk event. Intelligence briefings highlighted the increased potential for public gatherings and the use of pyrotechnics, regardless of the match outcome, given its eliminatory nature and the significant stakes of advancing to the semi-finals, even with a late broadcast time of 10 PM.
