Senegal space week 2026: why space mastery is critical for national security

At the launch of the second edition of Senegal Space Week 2026, General Birame Diop, speaking on behalf of President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye, delivered a powerful message to policymakers, security experts, and international partners. The central theme? Space technology is no longer a luxury—it is a strategic necessity for protecting national sovereignty.

The Minister of Armed Forces emphasized that today’s security battles are fought not only on land or at sea, but in the vast expanse of space. From monitoring borders to tracking maritime piracy and disrupting transnational crime, satellite-based intelligence and advanced data systems have become indispensable tools. Mastering space technology is now essential for Senegal to safeguard its territory and respond effectively to emerging threats.

The General highlighted the critical role of the Agence Sénégalaise d’Études Spatiales in strengthening the country’s space capabilities. Through satellite imagery, precision mapping, and geospatial intelligence, Senegal is enhancing its defense and security operations. These tools enable better decision-making, early risk detection, and rapid response to crises. During the event, several international partnership agreements were signed, reinforcing Senegal’s commitment to collaborative space innovation.

Beyond infrastructure and technology, the Minister stressed the importance of investing in human capital. He called for expanded education and training programs in space science, digital technologies, and innovation for Senegalese youth. “We must build a generation of experts who can lead our space sector,” he said, positioning Senegal not just as a participant, but as a leader in Africa’s space future.

The ceremony also honored General Mansour Seck, a pioneering figure in Senegalese aviation history, whose legacy continues to inspire the nation’s aerospace ambitions.
