UN urges inclusive dialogue in DRC to uphold freedoms

A UN Security Council meeting

The United Nations has issued a strong political message from the UN Security Council to Kinshasa, urging all Congolese stakeholders to reach consensus on an inclusive national dialogue framework. The call emphasizes the preservation of civic space and fundamental freedoms—particularly freedom of expression and assembly—to ensure all parties can engage within a peaceful and secure environment.

This appeal carries added weight amid deep divisions over constitutional reform and recent tensions surrounding the headquarters of the CENCO in Kinshasa, which was reportedly targeted by government supporters.

On the security front, the UN diplomat welcomed the establishment of a national commission overseeing security sector reform, as well as the ongoing development of the country’s first national security policy, led by the presidency.
