The United States President has forwarded a fresh batch of ambassadorial nominations to the Senate, marking a strategic shift in American diplomatic representation across Africa. Among the proposed appointments are two key figures set to take up roles in Chad and Gabon.
Seasoned diplomats selected for n’djamena and Libreville
William Flens, a seasoned diplomat with extensive experience in the Senior Foreign Service, has been tapped to serve as the next American ambassador to Chad. Flens currently holds the position of chargé d’affaires in N’Djamena, having been stationed there since July 2025. His deep familiarity with the region positions him well to strengthen bilateral ties between the two nations.
Similarly, Keith Heffern, another career diplomat from the Senior Foreign Service, has been nominated as the U.S. ambassador to Gabon. Heffern brings prior diplomatic experience from his earlier assignment in Libreville, demonstrating a long-standing engagement with Central African affairs.
Broader diplomatic reshuffle across the continent
The latest nominations are part of a wider diplomatic realignment, encompassing additional African nations. The proposed candidates include Marc Dillard for Madagascar, Charles Goodman III for Togo, Jessica Long for Mauritania, Peter Lord for Benin, John McIntyre for Malawi, and Nutan Patel for Cape Verde. These appointments follow a significant recall of nearly 30 career ambassadors toward the end of 2025 and early 2026, including those previously posted in Cameroon and Gabon, as part of an effort to realign U.S. foreign policy with the “America First” doctrine.
Challenges and pending confirmations
While Chad and Gabon are moving forward with new leadership, Cameroon remains without a nominated ambassador. The previous U.S. ambassador to Cameroon departed in January 2026 as part of the broader recall, and no successor has yet been proposed to the Senate. All nominations are currently awaiting confirmation before they can take effect.
