In a formal message to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reaffirmed Washington’s unwavering commitment to the long-standing bilateral relationship between the United States and Morocco. The occasion marked the 27th anniversary of the King’s ascension to the throne, a milestone celebrated with deep respect and shared optimism.
Foundations built on history and shared values
Rubio highlighted that the U.S.–Morocco alliance represents the oldest friendship in American diplomatic history, stretching back nearly 250 years. This enduring partnership, he noted, rests on common principles—peace, security, and shared prosperity—guiding both nations in their mutual engagement.
Sustained cooperation across key sectors
The Secretary emphasized that bilateral collaboration will intensify in the coming years, spanning economic growth, technological innovation, and regional stability. “Together, we will continue advancing peace and prosperity that benefit both our peoples,” Rubio stated in the official communiqué.
Morocco’s leadership in regional security
He praised Morocco’s pivotal role in fostering stability across North Africa and the Sahel, particularly through its instrumental contribution to the Abraham Accords. “Under the visionary leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Morocco stands as a pillar of security in the region,” Rubio remarked.
Sovereignty and autonomy: a just path forward
Reiterating a firm U.S. position, Rubio underscored full support for Morocco’s proposal for autonomy in the Sahara, calling it the only credible and realistic solution. He cautioned against alternatives that risk prolonging the status quo, asserting that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty offers the region a historic opportunity for progress.
