After months of uncertainty in the transfer market, Borussia Dortmund appears ready to finalise the departure of Brazilian right-back Yan Couto. The 24-year-old defender, whose contract runs until 2030, is on the verge of securing a move to Italian Serie A side Como 1907, following protracted negotiations.
Como emerges as the frontrunner in Couto’s departure
Relations between Dortmund and Como have reached an advanced stage, with both clubs reportedly agreeing to a loan deal that could include a future purchase option. This arrangement would mark Couto’s second stint in a loan move, having previously joined Dortmund from Manchester City in 2024. At the time, the Bundesliga club secured an obligation to buy, which they activated in the summer of 2025 after a modest first season. The total expenditure for his permanent transfer reached €25 million, despite limited first-team opportunities.
Couto’s second season at Dortmund proved equally challenging. Under manager Niko Kovač, the Brazilian struggled to secure consistent playing time, making just twelve appearances between mid-March and mid-May. His lack of minutes raised questions about his future role within the squad, prompting club officials to explore exit strategies.
Potential Champions League football awaits in Italy
Como’s renewed interest in Couto comes after initial hesitation. Earlier in July, reports suggested the Italian club had cooled on the deal, instead considering alternative right-back options. However, recent developments indicate a change of heart. With former Spain international Cesc Fàbregas at the helm, Como secured a fourth-place finish in Serie A last season, earning qualification for the UEFA Champions League. This continental competition adds appeal to Couto’s potential move, offering him a platform to showcase his abilities on a bigger stage.
The proposed loan deal would allow Como to evaluate Couto’s performance before committing to a permanent transfer. Should the Brazilian impress during his stint in Italy, the Serie A side could activate the buy option, making the move a strategic investment for both clubs.
