Organizers unveil plans for the 51st Francophonie parliamentary summit in Cameroon
The countdown has begun for Cameroon’s hosting of the 51st session of the Assemblée parlementaire de la francophonie (APF), a major intercontinental gathering scheduled to take place in Yaoundé in just two weeks. The organizing committee, led by Parliamentarian Hilarion Etong, has revealed key details about the event following a press briefing. With preparations in full swing, the country anticipates welcoming over 300 delegates, including parliamentary chamber heads and 80 young delegates from across the APF’s four regions: Africa, the Americas, Asia-Pacific, and Europe.
Already, 275 participants have confirmed their attendance, with notable figures such as Amelia Lakrafi, APF’s delegate general, and Louise Mouchoukiwabo, Secretary-General of the International Organisation of La Francophonie, expected to join the ranks.
The organizing committee, established in January 2026, comprises members from both the Senate and National Assembly, totaling 17 specialized subcommittees to handle every logistical and thematic aspect of the event. Eight hotels of varying standards have been reserved to accommodate attendees.
Key discussions to shape the agenda
The summit’s program will revolve around two pivotal themes. The first, “Multilateralism and State Sovereignty,” will explore how Francophone nations can strengthen collective action against global challenges such as terrorism, migration flows, and democratic instability. The second theme, “Francophone Parliaments in the Face of Climate Change in a Shifting World,” will focus on turning international climate agreements into enforceable national legislation.
The schedule is packed with high-level meetings, including a bureau session on July 7, 2026, followed by gatherings of young parliamentarians and women parliamentarians on July 8. The same day will feature an excursion to the Nachtigal site. The four permanent APF commissions will convene on July 9, culminating in the official opening of the session on July 10. The event will conclude on July 11, 2026.
