Benin’s new government sets monthly council meetings and strategic direction

On Thursday, May 28, 2026, the inaugural Council of Ministers for the 2026-2033 seven-year term convened, presided over by Head of State Romuald Wadagni. During this crucial session, the government established its overarching strategic guidelines for the next seven years of national development.

During the gathering, the Béninese president emphatically reminded all government members of their core duty: to serve the public interest with unwavering rigor, profound responsibility, and exemplary conduct. Presidential directives underscored that all governmental actions must be rooted in principles of sobriety, integrity, solidarity, and accountability, aiming to strengthen the bond of trust between the state and its citizens.

Among the foremost objectives defined for this seven-year mandate are the eradication of extreme poverty, a significant reduction in social and territorial disparities, and the reinforcement of national security. The administration is committed to fostering more balanced development across the nation through an equitable distribution of public investments.

The first Council of Ministers also saw the approval of a revised operational framework for the Executive branch. This new structure is designed to enhance the coordination of public initiatives and accelerate decision-making processes.

Going forward, the Council of Ministers will convene for its ordinary session on the first Wednesday of every month. The Interministerial Committee is scheduled to hold two monthly sessions, specifically on the first and third Mondays. Meanwhile, Cabinet Councils will be organized flexibly, as dictated by the specific requirements of the various ministerial departments.

With this foundational Council meeting, the Béninese government for the 2026-2033 septennate officially embarks on its operational phase. Its comprehensive roadmap is firmly centered on institutional discipline, performance excellence, and a steadfast commitment to fulfilling societal expectations.
