Union démocratique du Cameroun condemns alleged torture of activist Jacques Bertrand Mang

The Union démocratique du Cameroun (UDC), led by its president Patricia Tomaino Ndam Njoya, has strongly condemned the alleged torture and inhumane treatment of political activist Jacques Bertrand Mang. The party describes these acts as a blatant violation of Cameroon’s constitutional principles, emphasizing that no form of dissent or civic engagement could ever justify such brutality.

In an official statement, the UDC underscored that the integrity of Jacques Bertrand Mang must be preserved at all costs. The party demands a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his detention, urging authorities to ensure his physical and moral well-being while guaranteeing the full protection of his fundamental rights.

Jacques Bertrand Mang, widely recognized for his vocal stance against social injustices, everyday hardships faced by Cameroonians, and governance issues, remains a prominent figure in the national discourse. On June 30, 2026, he was allegedly subjected to torture and mistreatment while in police custody in Douala. During a live Facebook broadcast, Mang pleaded with officers for his release, only to be met with dismissive responses, including the claim that he could not leave in an “angry state.” Despite repeated attempts to exit the police station, he was prevented from doing so until a superior officer arrived.

This incident is not an isolated one. Mang has previously faced arrest and involuntary psychiatric confinement, as well as multiple judicial complaints filed against him for his outspoken criticism. His social media content frequently targets law enforcement agencies, including police, gendarmerie, customs, municipal authorities, government officials, political figures, and even public celebrities. Reports indicate he was subsequently placed in police custody.
