Abidjan – A contingent of one hundred and fifty elite soldiers, clad in distinctive camouflage and combat fatigues, marched with precision, weapons at the ready. Their faces concealed by masks, balaclavas, and berets, they moved with a coordinated rhythm known as the “Chameleon Step.” Leading the formation was a coordinator proudly displaying the red, yellow, and green flag of Guinea, while skilled snipers maintained position at the rear, a formidable presence.
The audience erupted in sustained applause, punctuated by enthusiastic standing ovations and military salutes from the official tribune, as the Special Forces of the Republic of Guinea paraded. This impressive spectacle was part of the 66th anniversary celebrations of Côte d’Ivoire’s independence, held in Abidjan.
Concluding the parade of foreign contingents on Friday, August 7, their display garnered significant attention. Across television channels and social media platforms, journalists, bloggers, and internet users universally commended the Guinean detachment’s powerful demonstration.
An Ivorian spectator, Deloy Dadié, expressed his admiration: “I am Ivorian, but for me, this was the best parade. So serene, I keep watching it. I even downloaded the video. Thank you, Guinea.” Brice Kouadio echoed this enthusiasm, stating, “The best for me this year: imposing, powerful, fierce, and elegant!”
Constant Silué went further, drawing a comparison: “I liked the Guinean army’s parade more than ours. It’s my first time seeing the Guinean Special Forces. It’s magnificent. Thank you very much, Guinea. You are sincere and true neighbors.”
The images of the parade also resonated deeply within Guinea, sparking a wave of national pride. Bory Diallo noted, “The sub-region is impressed by the Guinean army.”
Ibrahima Bah underscored the profound symbolic significance of Guinea’s participation: “Maintaining strong relations with neighbors is always beneficial. There’s a significant Guinean community in Côte d’Ivoire, and seeing our army march on this occasion fills us, Guineans, especially those living in this wonderful country, with immense pride.”
This sentiment was widely shared, with Sekou Moriba adding, “Despite everything, when we see them, our hearts are filled with a kind of pride.”
This is not the first instance where the Guinean Special Forces have seized public attention. Since their memorable appearance on October 2, 2018, during Guinea’s own independence day festivities, this elite unit has consistently distinguished itself, gradually earning a reputation as one of the nation’s most spectacular military formations.
In Abidjan, their recent performance once again left an indelible mark on all who witnessed it.
