A fresh legal battle has emerged following Ousmane Sonko’s controversial comments about the holy city of Touba. A descendant of Serigne Touba has formally petitioned the Public Prosecutor at the Dakar High Court to initiate a judicial inquiry into the remarks.
In a formal complaint filed on July 14, 2026, Serigne Modou Maroun Niang—identified as a Senegalese citizen, entrepreneur, and grandson of the city’s founder—argued that Sonko’s statements severely tarnish Touba’s reputation and insult its people. The complaint centers on a public address where Sonko allegedly claimed that “dirty money” flowed into the sacred city, a claim that contradicts Touba’s legacy of integrity and piety, as embodied by Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba.
The petition demands an immediate investigation, including a sworn testimony from Sonko to clarify his remarks and provide supporting evidence. The complainant also seeks a thorough examination of the allegations, with potential legal action if the claims are deemed defamatory or false under Senegalese law.
Serigne Modou Maroun Niang claims to possess substantial evidence, including video recordings, transcriptions of the controversial statements, and media publications that reference the remarks. This legal move adds another layer of tension to the ongoing political discourse surrounding Sonko’s public statements and could lead to further judicial proceedings if the prosecution takes up the case.
