Ouagadougou urges african union to embrace bold reforms

The Burkinabè Minister of Foreign Affairs, Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, met with Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, President of the African Union Commission, on July 15 during his regional tour of the three member states of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES): Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso.

The discussions centered on strengthening ties between the African Union and Burkina Faso, as well as exploring broader cooperation with the AES. According to an official statement from the Burkinabè Foreign Ministry, key topics included Burkina Faso’s political and security landscape, regional dynamics with neighboring countries, the ECOWAS-AES dialogue process, and critical reforms needed within the AU itself.

Mahamoud Ali Youssouf emphasized that his visit aimed to revitalize AU-Burkina Faso relations through deeper integration and shared solidarity. Addressing the Sahel’s persistent challenges, he outlined the AU’s three-pillar strategy focusing on governance, security, and sustainable development. The AU’s approach involves scaling up specialized agency operations in Burkina Faso and launching initiatives that directly improve citizens’ lives.

Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré highlighted the origins of the AES, framing it as a response to perceived gaps in continental solidarity amid escalating security threats. He called on the AU to implement “objective and courageous reforms” to address the frustrations of member states that have taken independent action to secure their populations when continental support fell short.

The Burkinabè diplomat also proposed a modernized AU with greater financial independence, arguing that reliance on external funding restricts the continent’s strategic decision-making. Communication emerged as another priority, with Traoré stressing the need to counter external media narratives by showcasing African progress and potential. He further advocated for a more inclusive, proximity-based diplomacy within the AU’s framework.
