Senegal’s National Assembly President Ousmane Sonko has publicly acknowledged the Constitutional Council’s ruling that invalidated the constitutional reform bill recently passed by lawmakers. In a statement, the Pastef leader emphasized that the Council’s decision is binding for all stakeholders.
Addressing the nation, Sonko declared, « Beyond differing interpretations of the reasoning behind this decision, one fact remains clear: this ruling applies to everyone. We accept it unreservedly. »
Institutional harmony key to stability, says Sonko
In his remarks, Sonko underscored the importance of institutional roles operating within their designated frameworks. « When institutions fulfill their mandates as intended, with each respecting its boundaries, crises simply do not arise, » he noted.
Reaffirming the Assembly’s commitment to its legislative duties, he added, « The National Assembly will continue to exercise its constitutional functions without compromise. Laws will be enacted or rejected in accordance with our solemn pledge to the resilient people of Senegal. »
