Cameroon’s MRC party clarifies Maurice Kamto’s political transition
The newly appointed chair of Cameroon’s Commission for Clarification and Restoration, established by opposition leader Maurice Kamto, addressed the public in a recent television interview. Pierre Emmanuel Binyam, a prominent member of the Movement for the Rebirth of Cameroon (MRC), shed light on Kamto’s decision to step away from party leadership to pursue an independent presidential bid for the 2026 elections—a candidacy ultimately rejected.
«The president’s departure from the party was not a formal resignation but rather a mission assignment,» Binyam explained. «Now that the mission has concluded, we have requested his return to complete his term.»
Binyam emphasized the profound impact of Kamto’s exclusion from the 2026 race. «The rejection of Maurice Kamto’s candidacy left deep scars within the party,» he stated. «Public opinion polls consistently projected him as the overwhelming favorite, both nationally and internationally.»
