The political landscape in Senegal is heating up as internal debates within the Pastef party intensify. Accusations of betrayal against President Diomaye Faye have sparked calls for his exclusion from the party that once propelled him to power. However, Ousmane Sonko, a key figure in Pastef, has urged caution, emphasizing that the situation will be assessed in due course.
In a recent interview, Sonko made it clear that the party’s leadership will determine the next steps, adhering strictly to its established procedures. “This will be assessed at the appropriate time,” he stated, adding that Pastef operates with well-defined rules for handling such matters. “The party is highly structured and organized, with clear texts outlining the process for evaluating exclusion or other disciplinary actions,” Sonko explained.
When pressed on whether Diomaye Faye’s actions constitute a betrayal of the party’s founding ideals, Sonko refrained from using moralistic language. Instead, he framed the issue in political terms. “Betrayal is a matter of morality and emotion. I prefer to focus on the political dimension,” he said. Sonko went on to highlight discrepancies between the party’s commitments to the Senegalese people and the current reality. “Many of the promises we made are not being honored, and there appears to be no genuine effort to fulfill them,” he noted.
Sonko’s remarks underscore the delicate balance Pastef must strike as it navigates internal tensions while maintaining its public image. The party’s leadership has yet to take decisive action, signaling a deliberate approach to resolving the crisis.
